What your AI assistant can do
Everything a connected assistant like Claude or ChatGPT can do with your troop over MCP, who can use each action, and the kinds of things to ask it.
Once you've connected an assistant to your troop, you just ask in plain English — the assistant works out which actions it needs. This page lists what it has to work with, so you know what to ask for.
An assistant can never do more than you can. Every action checks your role in the troop, and the permissions you approved when you connected.
Each action has a technical name, shown after it (like get_upcoming_events). You never need to type these — they're here in case your assistant mentions one.
Things to try
Anyone:
- "What's coming up on the troop calendar this month?"
- "Who's going to Saturday's hike?"
- "How do I set up a recurring event in MyTroop?"
Leaders:
- "Do we have enough drivers for the campout?"
- "Who has paid for summer camp so far?"
- "Create a committee meeting on the second Tuesday of next month at 7pm in the church basement."
- "Text everyone going to Saturday's hike that we're meeting at 8 instead of 9."
Calendar and events
Anyone can:
- See what's coming up — events in the next 30 days, or however far ahead the assistant asks.
get_upcoming_events - Search for an event by a word in its title, description or location, from the last 90 days onward.
search_events - Get the details of one event, including its attached files.
get_event_details
Leaders can also:
- Create an event — times, location, RSVPs, payments, attendance limits and an RSVP deadline. One-time events only.
create_event - Change an event — any of the same details.
update_event - Attach a file — a permission slip, gear list or map. See event files.
attach_event_file - Remove an attached file.
delete_event_attachment
RSVPs, drivers and payments
Anyone can:
- See who's going — who has said yes, no or maybe to an event.
get_rsvp_summary
Leaders can also:
- See driver signups and seat assignments for an event.
get_driver_summary - See payments for an event — each family's payment, whether it's paid, pending or paid offline, and the amount.
get_payment_status
Admins can also:
- RSVP for another family — each of its adults and scouts.
rsvp_for_family
Roster
Leaders can:
- See the roster — every family in the troop, with its adults and scouts.
get_roster - Look up one family in detail.
get_family_details
Sending messages
These send real messages to real families. They count toward the troop's sending limits just like messages sent from the website. A good assistant shows you the message before it sends; if yours doesn't, ask it to.
Leaders can:
- Email the troop — everyone, or just the leaders.
send_email - Text the families going to an event — those who RSVP'd yes. Long messages are refused, and the assistant should use email instead.
send_sms
MyTroop help
Anyone can:
- List the help articles in this help center.
list_help_articles - Read a help article in full.
get_help_article
These let an assistant answer "how do I…" questions about MyTroop itself, from the same articles you're reading now. They work on every connection, whatever permissions you approved.
When the assistant says it can't
- It says the action "requires" a role (such as
assistant_leader, which is a leader) — that action needs a higher role than yours. Ask a troop admin if you think your role is wrong. - "was not granted the … scope" — the assistant doesn't have your permission for that yet: you didn't approve it when you connected, or the connection is older than the action. Remove the app under Connected apps in your profile and connect again (see connecting).
